For the past two and a half years I've been using a Sony a350 but I was keen to make the step up to an intermediate dSLR.
Not wanting to start a new lens collection by opting for a Canon or Nikon, I bought myself another Sony; this time the a580.
It has an improved sensor, a greater ISO range (and a feature that reduces noise by merging 2 or 3 shots), a larger LCD screen and a pretty rapid 7fps (as opposed to the sluggish 2 or 3 that the a350 was capable of).
It has a couple of gimmicks that I don't see myself using too often - HD video recording and panoramic option.
One thing that I need to understand more is the Depth of Field preview option as I'm clueless at this point. As the study materials suggest, a read of the user manual is in order.
For the record, in addition to the 18-55 kit lens, I have a fixed 50mm, a 70-200 zoom lens and a wide angle 10-20.
